NEW DEMO IS UP

Hi!

Quick update to notify the new demo is live.
Download it here!

Below a bit of context and backstory.

The demo

Reality keeps shifting, making Emo a mere pawn of fate at this stage.

You remember arriving at the Villa. It was sunset and the sun was glowing warm. Inside, it was empty. Rooms without a life. Sometimes even odd...Someone in a quick note left in the main hall says they went downstairs... to get some wine.  You went investigate.

As you were going down you noticed something even more unusual: the walls and the floors, earlier painted in a nice plaster, suddenly became grey and chequered.

Then your memory starts to falter.

You remember ending up in a maze-like basement.
And a man. A man dressed in violet, with long, thin moustaches.

You are not sure what happened to you down there. And then...

blank...

You find yourself in yet another gray room. Emo —the same man as before— is just ahead. He appears to have been here a bit longer and suggests that you check the next room. According to him, whatever is inside will provide a way out.

Oddly enough, he insists that you go in and has even prepared some weapons for you.

There seems to be no alternative.

At least you are well equipped.

Takeaways

Overall, I'm happy I've completed something cohesive that effectively showcases enhancements to the combat system.

The setup, core challenge, and reward are there -minimalistic, but present nonetheless.

Some lessons learnt:

  • I should have kept my focus and developed first the arena and then branched out from there, instead of starting with a full level and leave the arena last. Seems obvious now :O
  • I am not yet fully satisfied with the end result in terms of crunchiness: if I want to improve this, I will need to tweak melee attack animations and add hit reactions to the simple physical animation setup I have showcased here. Fire weapons instead feel much nicer. A bit exaggerated, yes, but fun. What do you think?
  • Adding context, even minor, is a game changer. It definitely adds to the fun and it helps to design with purpose.

What's Next?

I will announce a new deadline for the next demo soon. It got to be again making a level around a concept. I will keep playing around and try new scenarios, collecting the fun bits in the process.

And I will bring you and our unfortunate characters with me.
